Adding or replacing insulation is one of the best home improvement projects you can do to save money on energy costs. It traps warm air in the winter and cool air in the summer, prolongs the life of your roof, cuts cooling costs and improves indoor air quality.
Spray foam insulation you start insulating, make sure your attic space is clean, dry and adequately ventilated. Check for leaks, mold, pest infestation and rot.
Choose the type of insulation that is right for your home. Choose between fiberglass batts or blankets and blown-in cellulose or mineral wool. If you choose loose fill, use only those that are “unfaced.” The paper or foil backing on some brands of fiberglass is a fire hazard and should be removed prior to installing. Loose fill requires a special blowing machine, available at most home improvement stores.
Reduce Bills with Insulation: How Attics Make a Difference
If you decide to use blown-in cellulose, get r-38 or higher (the higher the better). It is more expensive but it has a much greater r-value per inch and is safer for you and your family, and rats hate it (it’s also fire resistant).
Once you’ve installed your new insulation, be sure to seal any air leaks around vents, pipes and where walls meet ceilings with caulking or spray foam. You can also use weather stripping to close gaps around exterior doors. With a little time and effort, your new attic insulation will help make your home more comfortable throughout the year and energy-efficient for years to come.
