Artificial Intelligence in Video Games

The use of artificial intelligence in video game design can and does enhance gaming experiences. From complex rules-based systems to more natural, emergent behaviours generated by higher level algorithms, AI is helping to create a wide range of exciting new game play possibilities. 92 Jeeto Login

AI game designs have typically relied on a combination of basic algorithms, such as decision trees and finite state machines, to model non-player character (NPC) behaviours. In a combat scenario, for example, an NPC may make a decision to attack or defend itself based on its health, the number of enemies, and the current environment. A system like a decision tree weighs all these factors in real time and determines the best course of action.

More advanced algorithms, such as behavior trees, allow for more hierarchical structures and deeper levels of behavioural complexity. For instance, an NPC may first assess whether it is safe to pursue a target, then seek out cover and finally retaliate if it believes its safety is compromised. Behavior trees help to make NPCs feel more intelligent and adaptable, making them more lifelike.

Other sophisticated AI technologies are also being applied to improve gameplay, from natural speech generation to simulated body gestures. For instance, speech-to-text and deep learning programs can produce text that mimics the way human speakers speak, with variations in tone and rhythm. This technology could help to make NPC dialogue in future games more realistic and believable.
