Aspire Needs Your Help!

We rely greatly on donations to help fund our projects and services. No matter what size your contribution is, all funding received will be used by us effectively to ensure a brighter future for people with Asperger Syndrome (AS).

Making a Donation to Aspire – The Asperger Syndrome Association of Ireland.  How would the funding be spent?

  • Aspire has been operating a Helpline since it was set up to assist those with the condition and their families and to raise awareness of the syndrome. Originally, the Helpline dealt with about 50 – 100 calls per month. In 2005 the number of enquiries often reached 200 to 300 per month. There is an urgent need to develop the Helpline and information service.
  • There is a vocational Training Course (known as Tuiscint) for young adults with the condition in Dublin. Tuiscint offers a three-year training programme that facilitates students to make the transition from dependency to managing their own lives. The centre has national accreditation and offers ECDL and FETAC certification. Unfortunately there is a long waiting list and Aspire would like to set up further training centres in Dublin and throughout the country.
  • Aspire has assisted in the setting up and development of twenty support groups across Ireland to better serve people and the families of those with this condition. We need better resources to ensure that more support groups are set up.
  • Unfortunately many children with Asperger syndrome drop out of school, particularly at second level. We need funding to employ an Education Officer to help retain these children at school and to assist the families to ensure their continued education.
  • Aspire organises conferences and seminars on a regular basis in order to raise awareness of AS nationwide. With increased funding we could hold these more often and on a regular basis.

  • Drama classes for children and adolescents (6 to 18 years) with AS have been running in conjunction with Dr. Carmel O’Sullivan (Education Dept. Trinity College), and these started in September 2004. Many parents have found positive improvements in their children’s behaviour at home and in class but a lot more funding is required to deal with our waiting list and also to expand this service on a regional basis.
  • Aspire has been involved with supported employment services since 1998 when a pilot project with financial assistance from EU Horizon funds. The service has assisted many adults to find employment who otherwise would never become employed. With additional funding, we could develop other much needed supported employment centres.
  • Aspire set up a residential house for adults with AS in Ballinteer, Dublin in January 2004. At present there are a small number of residents and in 2004 an extension was built to the house, which provided further bedrooms. We would like to expend this service and purchase further houses.
  • When funding becomes available, Aspire provides Respite Care Grants for families affected by the condition.
  • Aspire produces pamphlets, leaflets, a quarterly newsletter and runs a website which provides members with the critical data and support information on AS. Funding is urgently needed to ease the financial burden of administrative, printing and material costs of these activities.
